Where the Dachshund comes from

Dachshund means badger dog in German. They were bred in Germany to go underground after badgers, and their long body, short legs and big voice come from that job.

Personality and daily life

Bold, curious and a bit stubborn. Dachshunds are loyal and can be clingy, with a bark that is bigger than their body.

Dachshunds are brave little hunters with big voices. Protect their long backs by limiting jumping and stairs.

Exercise, grooming and health

Walks and play are enough, but protect their backs: avoid jumping off furniture and keep them lean. Spinal disc disease is the main risk. Coat care depends on the variety, from smooth to long-haired and wire-haired.

Is a Dachshund right for you?

Owners happy with a spirited personality, in apartments or houses. Not ideal for homes with lots of stairs.

  • Copes well with apartment living
  • Can be stubborn, better for experienced owners
  • Easy to groom
