Where the Afghan Hound comes from

Afghan Hounds are an ancient sighthound from the mountains of Afghanistan, bred to hunt gazelle and hare in rough country. The long coat protected them from cold.

Personality and daily life

Dignified, independent and sometimes aloof. Afghans are affectionate with family but not eager to obey, and can be sensitive.

Afghans are elegant sighthounds with a long coat that needs lots of grooming. They are independent and not the easiest to train.

Exercise, grooming and health

Daily running in a secure area. The long silky coat needs a lot of brushing, ideally daily. Hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. They are not easy to train.
